THE DIFFERENCE
CLEAN IS NOT THE SAME AS SMOOTH
Run your hand over freshly washed paint inside a sandwich bag. If it feels gritty, that's brake dust, rail dust, and tar baked into the clear coat. Washing won't remove it. The decontamination step and clay bar pull it out, so the sealant bonds to clean paint and the gloss actually shows.
